The PT Cruiser (like most CRY-slyers..pun intended) are moneypits and unreliable. Best to avoid it. Consumer Reports shows 100% negative ratings in ALL of these areas for a MAJORITY of the years that the PT Cruiser was available: Engine Major Engine Cooling Transmission Major Transmission Minor Drive System Fuel System Engine Minor Electrical System

Also, rust, especially in the rocker panels, which are structural on these unibody cars. They can go from whole to hole in a single summer.

But sometimes you get a good one... I have 280,000 miles on my '04 and it's still running great! The only major fixes have been a transmission rebuild at 165,000, rebuild the computer at about 200,000, and replace the catalytic converter at about 230,000. Otherwise, just good general maintenance has kept my car in great shape. I still love it!

I've known MANY "good ones"... I've got a 2001 PT Cruiser Limited that used to be the daily driver and then semi-retired into the show-car life. I've got just under 100K miles. All have been trouble free. They're not "money pits" as Racer_X put it. I have my 2001, my mom has a 2002 and a cousin also has a 2001. Neighbors around the corner have another 2001, a 2003 and a 2007 - all with no major problems (or even minor ones)... PT Cruisers are reliable and solid cars. Maybe a bit TOO solid, as they weight a LOT and that hurts the performance AND the fuel economy.
