2002 pt cruiser timing set up

put timing belt on 3 times, always end up with exhaust 1/2 notch above intake.
what if any thing have i done wrong

You have to have the cam sprocket closest to the passenger compartment a half tooth off to start. Don't remember which way, but what happens is that the tensioner pulls everything into alignment. It's been a while. Lol
