Engine

Asked by Marloja2016 Nov 04, 2019 at 06:26 AM about the 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser Limited Wagon FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

In have a 04 pt cruiser with 77,000 miles. The water
pump went out. And car would not turn back on.
Called a mechanic to look at it he continued to turn
the engine over until it made a screeching sound like
a belt slipped or broke. Only wanted to get water
pump replaced. At this point don't know what to do.
But wanted to know do you think my engine is
destroyed

If the water pump went out and no antifreeze was present you may have over heated the engine and thus blew the head gasket. However if there was still antifreeze and coolant was just dripping from the water pump weep hole it may be something else. The fact it would not start up but would turn over indicates a lack of spark to the coils or fuel delivery. I would take it to another mechanic.

It could also be the timing belt slipped and needs to be changed . either way a new timing belt would be installed when the water pump is. The job takes a bit more than 7 hours to do.
