why does my gas gauge move around

have a 2005 pt cruiser convertible.  the gastank light came on and eventually turned the check engine light onn and the code said it was the gas gauge censor.  i bought the unit, it was replaced BUT the gas gauge is continuing to do the same thing.  anybody else ever experience this or know how to fix it????
