Hello, I have a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8L with 140K on it. It intermittently experiences hesitation and stalling from a stop and what feels like misfiring at highway speeds. The problem can get quite sever and then suddenly stop after the van has rested for 30 minutes or more. Ambient temperature doesn't seem to matter as it does it when it is 25 degrees as well as 70 degrees. It also does it right from a cold start in the morning or after operating at highway speeds for 30 minutes. I've had it in to the dealer twice, they did a fuel injection cleaning as well as the throttle body. They say that the computer records no codes related to the problem. They even had it exhibit the behavior on a test drive, but found no codes. They are at a loss and want to replace the PCM. Do you think that is prudent at this point?

If it needs a PCM, I wouldn't have the dealer replace it. I would find a used or rebuilt one at a fraction of the parts department price and experiment with that.

Thank you for the advice! Do you think the dealer is looking in the right direction or is it more likely something else, vacuum leak, fuel pressure, sensor?

I have a 2002 Caravan and after replacing the wires, coil and cranc shaft sensor as was suggested on Car Guru, I took it to alocal dealer and it turned out to be the two oxygen sensors that was or were at fault, telling the computer the wrong info on gas needed. The van no longer misfires. good luck

I had the same problem on my 1996 chevy blazer. When driving in hot weather at highway speeds and gas tank almost going on empty. The problem was the fuel pump was going into a VAPOR LOCK inside the pump. After waiting 30 minutes, pump cooled off the the vapor lock disappeared. It happened to me 3 times before we finally figurerd out the symptoms why it was happening and we nailed it down to the old fuel pump. Try to keep the tank more than 1/2 full when driving on long trips in hot weather. Or get a new fuel pump .... $600 !!!
