what kind of transmission oil,or gear oil does my 1991 2.9 ford ranger take? does the transmission take gear oil?

ATF - there's a MERCON-V (mercon 5) multi vehicle ATF that should cover it. No gear oil - slows the synchro blocks way down.

I agree! Automatic Transmission Fluid only! Mercon V is perfect. Gear oil depending on the weight would leave you with a sticky mess. Bad, bad, bad.

Here's probably why he asked; I do have a jug of Coastal Multi-Purpose Dex-Merc Transmission Fluid, Says, Recommended in automatic transmissions in most GM and Ford Vehicles;1983 through 2005 General motors cars and Light Trucks requiring; Dexron, Dexron II, Dextron II (E), or Dexron III(G) or Dexron III (H). Not for use where Dexron VI is required. 1998 and later Fords (except those requiring Type F, Mercon V or Mercon SP. WOW!?!?
