Asked by Ramee Jan 25, 2018 at 12:03 AM about the 1996 Dodge RAM Van 2500 Cargo RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I have a 96 Dodge b2500 van and I took it fo a smog
and it failed. So I put guaranteed to pass emission test in
the tank and  changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor and
then it started! Starts up and sounds fine. Idle is great. But
it I go 40 or up hill it losses power and tranny keeps going
in funny gears like shifting in low gears going up hill and
high gears on the freeway while shaking like a kid in a
snow storm. Changed IAC. Nothing. Engine light on.
Misfiring, cat rattling, it sounds stupid! Going 40 on
Highway when going up hill is embarrassing while people
are honking at you. Please help. Cat might be clogged.
Please help!!

did it start running bad after you put that stuff in the tank ? I don't think there's any repairs in a can so I stay away from them , have someone rev the engine and see if there's a healthy blast of exhaust out the tail pipe

It started running bad after I put stuff in the tank and changed the plugs and wires cap and rotor! The van has 230,000 miles on it. Smells sorta bad. Just like exhaust tho! And it shakes when I hit the gas at about 65 mph. I let off the gas and it stops!
