Sounds like you've lost some coolant and the engine is air locked. Fill through the rad and try to bleed air out of the top of the motor. Use the bleeder screw if it has one or pop a heater hose off. It may take a few cycles of the thermostat opening to get all the air back out. Just remember that air is an insulator and it takes awhile for the engine to heat the air enough to open the thermostat. Fix any leaks if you can find them. Once the system is topped up you can use the reservoir again.
