Changed valve cover gasket now won't run

Changed  valve cover gasket on my
1990 ford festiva had to take throttle
body off used rtv as a replacement
gasket started engine up ran for
about half mile then just died all it will
do is crank I out new spark plugs
and wires and distributer cap on  
now will only run wen u are giving it
throttle but will die if u try to let it idle
it's smoking like crazy wen u keep it
reved up to run it's  smoking like
crazy could the rtv have holes in it
giving me to much air to fuel mixture
ratio any help would be great thank u

You probably need to put a "real" throttle body gasket on it. It sounds like a vacuum leak from the silicone failing.
