Fuel pump replacement dilemma on a 1991 GMC SIERRA

Asked by PattiF Dec 30, 2016 at 08:15 AM about the 1991 GMC Sierra 1500 K1500 SLX 4WD Standard Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just got a 91 GMC SIERRA on trade the fuel pump
needs to be replaced! My husband is a good
mechanic and has taught me everything I know
about rebuilding & working on vehicle's.

Here's my dilemma he wants me to take off the
bed to access the pump in the tank, but I'm a chick
and I'm restoring my truck myself so I want to
make it easier and accessible for future issues so i
was going to cut a hatch (flap) in the bed of the
truck over the tank and replace it.

You could but you shouldn't need to replace the fuel pump for another 100,000 miles.there really nothing to service other the the fuel pump. Don't you have a few friends that could help you lift off the bed...

I'm confused- you have to take the bed off?! Can't you just drop the gas tank? What happened to the easy-to-work-on pick-em-ups?
