Transmissions compatible with 1990 Ford Ranger 4x4 V6 4.0L

Asked by mckenziesmom1 Feb 28, 2012 at 11:07 PM about the 1990 Ford Ranger STD Extended Cab 4WD SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Rear seal was leaking and all the fluid came out of tranny. Had the fluid replaced seal
replaced. Mechanic put it back together and now it won't go in to any gears.
Mechanic says the tranny must be bad. I'm wondering if it's possible that the back
yard mechanic forgot to hook up a wire or something. Any ideas? Also what tranny is
compatible with the model

it is possible that the trans is smoked if it was ran low on fluid for extended time. i doubt that there should of been anything that removed from the trans to perform repair that would prevent it from going into gear. other donnor vehicles could be same divetrain rangers, mazda pickups, and explorers. junkyards generally can provide a match with your vin and offer a short warrantee to prove the trans u got from them isnt shot. i would get a second opinion from trans professional either dealership or a trans shop that is fimlar with your ranger. and evaluate the repair from that point

Another thing to check is the vacume modulator i have had experience that it gets stuck. and the vehicle either will not shift or will only shift to reverse. It is a pain to get at but fairly simple to remove and clean.
