1992 GMC Sierra not shutting down

Asked by Silverdollar75 Mar 22, 2020 at 12:37 PM about the 1992 GMC Sierra 1500 C1500 Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 92 GMC 4 x 4. When I shut the
ignition switch off the truck stays running. It
is not dieseling. In order to shut the truck off I
have to pull the ECM fuse. We have replaced
the ECM and this didn not fix it. The key
switch is in the off position and still running.
Disconnected the alternator and still runs.  I
feel that it’s feeding voltage back in  to the
ECM we cannot find out what would be
doing it.

Your ignition switch is located at the bottom of the steering column. It's connected to the ignition lock cylinder by a rod. When you turn the ignition lock cylinder the rod pushes or pulls the contacts on the ignition switch to make the correct connections. A common problem with GMs of this era is the rack and sector assembly in the steering column comes apart or jams. Sounds like yours has come apart or the rod that hooks on to the ignition switch has come off. The rod coming off is unlikely but it can happen. Hope that helps! Jim
