need help with fuel pump issues

i have a 1992 gmc sierra im having fuel pump issues i don't get the initial shot
of gas when i turn the key to start the truck but when i use starting fluid it runs
like a champ same when i hook a hot wire to it but wont start without help
from either when i hook the hot wire up the fuel pump kicks on but the pump
wont kick on with out the hot wire

Should start by checking the fuel pressure, should be 9 to 13 lbs. Possible fuel pump or the fuel regulator would need rebuilding in the TBI. You would have to do a dead head pressure check for the fuel pump to see if it is putting out the proper pressure first.

I agree with the answer...... Try turning on the key to ON and wait a few seconds, this allows the fuel pump to build pressure. Since it seems to run OK once started it may just be the fuel regulator allowing pressure to leak off when the car sits.
