How can I stop my starter from re-ingaging after the engine starts?

After I start my engine and release the Ignition Key, the Starter tries to re-ingage and makes a high pitch grinding sound because of the starter gears and the flywheel gears trying to mesh. What could cause this condition, and how can I fix it?

If you never had this problem before and it just started doing it starter soilnold is bad but if you just installed a new starter you will need to install some starter shims between the starter and where starter mounts to engine block. Also check for loose starter bolts the bolts that hold the starter to engine block.
NOT!, I've had a brand new starter and solenoid installed. What's happening is that something within the steering coloum is re-ingaging the starter after the motor is running. It's like as if I turned the key back into the ignition mode. If I keep moving the steering wheel and re trying it, it will continue to run without the starter re-ingaging.
could be your ignition switch and or key lock cylinder
