1994 GMC C1500 305 or 350?

Asked by GuruBVTC6 Jan 02, 2019 at 06:55 PM about the 1994 GMC Sierra 1500 C1500 SL Extended Cab SB

Question type: General

So I just bought a 1994 GMC truck. It's a C/k1500 in great shape with
126,000 miles showing on the speedo. The sticker on the radiator says it's a
5.7l engine. Great. But now that I got it home and ran the vin it says it's a 5.0.
It has a salvage title but again it's in great shape and at first I wasn't
concerned but now I'm suspicious. I'm not interested in a project truck with a
305 in it.

Is there another way to ID the engine?

You can ID a GM engine through the casting numbers on the block, heads, and intake. Just Google your casting numbers, there are tons of web sites out there that compile this info.

The engine VIN is located near the rear of the block on the driver's side. It's a nine digit number and the eighth digit identifies the engine displacement. Code "H" is the 5.0 liter. Code "G" is the 5.7 liter. So it came from the factory with a 5.0 engine. Check the engine block casting number hoping to find a "G" for 5.7 liter. Good Luck

The serial number from the VIN (the last 6 digits) should also match a stamped number on the block.
