Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hi Guys, I have a 1994 GMC Sierra with a 4.3 Litre Engine, and I just had my Tranny fall about on me while I was driving. First my Flywheel broke and then shortly after my Transmission started breaking up as I was driving. I need to replace my Tranny but have no Idea what size or model it is. If anyone can please help me with this I will be grateful?
Sincerely,
Big John

if you knew your fly wheel was comeing apart, why did you keep driveing it,as for the tranny, just call your dealership, tell them what you got .
4L60E is your transmission. or if it's before the age of electronics, a 400r4 transmission. I'm assuming an automatic here. If it's a manual, it could be a number of different ones from a Borg Warner t-5 or one made by german tranny maker Getrag. I had a Getrag in my '95 4.3 Sonoma. The full-size trucks generally used a lot of the same drivetrain parts like the transmission as the smaller trucks. Or I guess I should say that the smaller S-10 and Sonoma used the same transmissions as the full-sized ones did like the 4L60E. Actually the 4l60E (400r4 it's non electronic counterpart) was used in a wide array of GM trucks from the S-10/Sonoma to the Astro/Safari and the automatic equipped full-size half ton Sierras and Silverados.

If it's a '94 it should have a 4L60e. The 4L60e will have a large multi-pin plug on the passenger side of the tranny towards the back. A 94 is pre vortec so it should also have the seperate transmission control module under the hood. @Aaron And the 4L60e the new electric shift version of the 700r4. ?400r4? There is a 200. Depending on where you are these can be hard to get used and they're starting to rise in price.
According to the Vehicle Information Kit for the 1994 Chevrolet Truck at the GM Heritage Center, the base transmission was the MM5 five-speed manual. The optional automatic for the 4.3-liter engine was the 4L60E. The 4L80E was the automatic used on the diesel engines and it was optional on the 350 and 6.7.

@ Michael The 4L80e was only available with the 6.5 Diesel in the 1/2 tons or in the later models of the 454 SS. To get a regular truck with the 4L80e and a gas engine you needed to jump to 3/4 ton or larger chasis. 350 and 6.7 - you mean 350 and 7.4L the 454?
Yes, I meant the 7.4. The Vehicle Information Kits were originally reported from engineering to the marketing department. The VIK for this truck says the 4L80E was an optional transmission on V-8s and diesels. I can only go by what Chevy says. I haven't owned a Chevy truck for 30 years or so and I'm not about to buy one now. They don't need my money, they have Congress when funds get low.
My 94 trucks both have same 4 speed auto they dont have all the electrical BS like 95.any 94 will be right.same trans as 4l60e just dont have all the plug electrical parts.who needs all that mine got 250k miles before going bad moter still strong.Chevy is the leader. Who dont need help in life..there human.Congress blows more on weapons we never use..just saying to Mr Ford Guy.buy a Chevy u know u miss yours

Yeah sounds like you have a bad ground check all your grounds on your vehicle. You're getting a good ground once you hook your trailer up but not before ;). You're welcome.
You have a ground issue. I once had one do the same thing until the trailer ball was greased. Ground was lost and the lights quit!
Hey guys will the tranny of a 04 silverado fit a 95 Silverado
You don't use the hitch for grounding the trailer; spend 50 cents and actually run the ground connection via the trailer plug ... sheesh!
I would never use or recommend the ball for a ground path. I was referring to a customer who had a bad ground and didn't know it until he greased the ball. Proper method is run ground through the connector and to the frame.
