Why won't it start!?! 96 sierra 5.7l vortec

Asked by Jaryd Oct 28, 2014 at 10:24 AM about the 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 K1500 SLT 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 96 Sierra 5.7l vortec, the
truck has 285k on it. I got it a year
ago an COMPLETELY. Re did all of
the rust new panels everywhere.
Paint ETc. It's beautiful. However it
sat for about a year I started driving
it and the intake gaskets went out.
Replaced them. Good to go. Drove
for another 400 miles had a slight
misfire in cyllinder 6. New plugs and
wires. And then while at a stop sign it
died. Started up died. Went a little
but no power at all. Died. Kept dying
then wouldn't start. Then it kept no
starting.
Put in a new fuel pump filter and
pressure reg. now it will start with
starting fluid but it's really rough then
dies. I have spark.. Any suggestions?

check the fuel system- injectors might be dirty, the gas tank might be dirty- when fuel sits, it starts gumming up- especially with added ethanol-

Tank is clean, I put injector cleaner through it. It starts now, but dies. Have to turn the key on and off a few times and then it's golden. Fires up. Idle real rough then dies. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge. But when I pushed the nipple in on the line. It had nothing. No pressure at all? It fires up everytime if I turn the key on and off tho. And I tried "checking pressure" by pushing the nipple in again before starting. Still nothin. I'm at a complete loss. I though mate pump wasn't runnin after starting. Did a quick hard wire with some alligator clips and a jumper wire from the battery. Tried. Still no pressure and fires up the dies. Maybe reverse polarity on the pump? And it's running the fuel up the return line instead of the main line?

You really need to buy or borrow a gauge. Running or cranking should be 50-60 psi. If that leaks down soon after shutting it off, I'lll bet the injector spider regulator is leaking. Intake (just the top) needs to come off and install a new one. If you do this, make sure you use the re-designed one with solinoids at the tips
