1997 GMC Sierra

Have a 97. 1500  Sierra my tyranny is stuck in first
gear,reverse works.Fluid smells burnt but no gritty
feeling when rubbed between fingers.what could
be the problem.any ideas some kind of direction
someone could point me.

You could try to change the fluid and filter but burnt fluid is a sign that you have serious transmission problems. My guess is that it needs a rebuild.
