A4 1.8T AMB engine swap /which engines fit

Asked by silver911rdb Jan 17, 2010 at 11:57 AM about the 2004 Audi A4 1.8T quattro Sedan AWD

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 2004 A4 with a 1.8T AMB engine automatic transmission with a blown engine.  I found a 2003 1.8T
AMB engine with 45,000 miles from a manual gearbox car.  Can I use this engine in my automatic car.  I've
read that you can't use the manual gearbox engine in an automatic car because the flywheels are different.
Couldn't I just swap out the flywheels or is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks,

Rich

The flywheels are indeed different, I faced a similar problem in my 99.5 AEB car. The Vw/AUDI shop I work at had a 99 aeb turbo passat wagon with a good motor at 56k miles versus the a4 i bought with a worn out 150k (very rough 150k was an ex;s car haha) aeb. I was informed by one of the techs that not only are the flywheels different but the cranks are different because of the spines on the trannies and bolts of the flywheels. This was later confirmed once the wagon was parted out. I just rebuilt the motor and she runs great...with a GIAC 93 oct, turbo back catless custom exhaust, forge splittR valve, and intake of course :D

All the 1.8l engines from 1996-2006 fits the same. It doesn’t really matter what the codes are. The codes only matters when you doing internal modifications. Every manual and automatic engine can work on either any one of those cars from 1996-2006 Audi A4, vw Passat, Audi A6. Only thing you have to do when you changing the automatic tranny to manual, the spline from the gearbox that goes in the crankshaft is a bit smaller that the one on the automatic tranny so all you go to do is get a spiget bearing that will fit real tight in the crankshaft but the spline from the gearbox can go in it too
