Dear nofear1911-- Most manufacturers of high quality cars recommend 91 octane or better for their cars, as does Audi for the 2001 A4 2.8. A lot of people I know, including dealers, use regular gas until they find a lag in performance or a pinging sound coming from the engine. It is up to you. Good luck from Bovan.

audi's are very precision vehicles and should be given 91 or better. that being said however, the 2.8 would probably be fine with 87 octane, because it has no forced induction whereas the 1.8T absolutely needs 91 in order to avoid turbo detonations.

Your engine probably has a timing regulator that will eliminate any knock that 87, 89 would produce. My '03 1.8T does. Still, I only use 91+. It's $0.20 more per gallon. I have a 16 gallon tank. that's roughly $3 more for every fill up. I fill up every 2 weeks. That's $6/month. I'm happy to spend an extra $6 every month to enjoy better performance and take better care of my car.
