Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The speedometer has been malfunctioning with a loss of rated speed indicated while driving. Meaning, we are cruising at 40 mph and the speedometer will drop (out) down to 15 to 20 mph. Is this due to mechanical failure of the speedo cable? Are the speedo cables still mechanical (gear driven)? The speedometer is not digital. Thanks!

There is no cable and the system is electrically controlled. There will be a speed sensor about where you think the cable would go in the transmission but there will be sensor there instead/. Sounds like it is failing. Intermittant check engine Light ??? May or may not occur until sensor fails completely
