At Dusk/Dawn Automatic Lights Constant Flicker?

Recently purchased used 1997 Jeep GC.  Have lights set at Auto (headlights/dashboard/etc.)  At dusk / dawn the lights (ALL - Headlights/dashboard lights/interior lights) flicker on/off/on/off.  This can last 10 seconds or length of trip.  Sometimes will stop & then start again.  If I switch over setting to Headlights ON - issue stops.  If I switch back to Auto, same pattern begins.  Never happens during the day - Only in day/night or night/day transition and night time.  Took it to Jeep dealer and they had no ideas.  Hoping to find quick/cheap resolution.  (Note:  Yes, I could use the on/off light switch however I have a tendancy to forget to shut them off - spoiled by other cars.)

I am surprised to hear that the dealer couldnt find the issue, as seeing it was the dealer that fixed my (exact same issue) Cherokee (99). The light density sensor is in need of replacement (that fixed mine). It senses the light and shuts the lights off, they it see that it is night and kicks the lights on. I had mine replaced and it was fine, mind you I lost the truck for two days (it was under warranty). Best of luck

it sounds to me like your photo cell is going bad, thats the light sensor that turns the lights on auto.. you can either get a new sensor(not worth tearing up dash to replace) or just switch it manually. The car dings if u leave them on. ( or atleast it should, my 97 zj does. )
