need to know what make/model engines will
interchange

The 4.0 liter six engine in the Dakota is a V6 not an inline six like the Jeep so that isn't going to work. I would say to stay within the same generation of Jeep that you have and that would be 1992- 1998. I would be concerned about compatibility problems with the ECM too. Play it safe and call the salvage yard and stick with 1997. I knew a guy who bought a 1999 Jeep engine hoping to put it in his 2000 Jeep and the motor mounts didn't match up. The WJ Jeeps ran 1999-2004.
