98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Rear Door Latch

Asked by Nomikos1982 May 30, 2011 at 02:38 AM about the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The latch is not gummed up with crud I cleaned and oiled it and it moves freely
when I play with it with the door open.  But when the door is down and closed
and I pull up on the handle it does not click or engage the latch in any way to
open.  I took off the paneling and looked in behind at what attaches the handle
to the latch and it looks like there is a small threaded bar roughly 1/8th thick the
part that is threaded is not attached to anything nor does it have a nut screwed
on.  I'm guessing that is where the problem is.  Please any help on what I need to
do would be greatly appreciated.

that threaded bar connects to a plastic clip on the latch mechanism. it should be a white or grey clip that snaps onto an arm. the rod should have no play when it reconnected. just tight enough that theres no slop to it. i hope this helps. if that white clip is missing, go down to dodge and pick one up. its about $4 or $5.
