Anti theft system

Asked by 99jeepmax Feb 03, 2020 at 07:21 PM about the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 99 jeep grand cherokee. Bought it used 2 months
ago.it came with a regular cut key. Had to change the
heater core. When the dash was spart my son noticed a
skim module unplugged. He didnt know at the time what it
was so he plugged it in. When we put everything back
together the car wont stay on any the anti theft light on
the dash comes on. We tried disconnecting the skimmer
and and battery and disconnecting the computer from
inside the engine bay. Left overnight for residual power to
drain. Reconnected computer and battery without
skimmer. Same problem. Car is looking for chip key which
I never had.

When your son plugged in the skim module the ecm was looking for the pin from it to allow vehicle to start. Since you have a black key you don't need the skim. Now that it has been activated you'll need to have your ecm reprogrammed for non skim function. This is the only way around the starting/stalling issue.
