1999 Jeep Cherokee back firing

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee new
motor but it keeps shutting off
and back fires real loud  what
could it be

It's definitely a timing issue. Without knowing more specifics I can add more than that.

A backfire, like a gunshot, a few seconds after the engine is shut off is a bad diverter valve for the AIR emission control system. Hope that helps! Jim
