my check engine light is on also cooling sensor bad

It is a 1999 grand cherokee.  My friend put it into low 4wd and then to disengage put it in
reverse.  Now at speeds of 50 or higher the rpms go high and gear won't change.  I can
let it sit then it runs again and same thing giving it gas revs the rpm and it looses power

Sounds like it might be stuck in 4wd. Start the Jeep. Put the gear selector in neutral, then put the transfer case selector in 4 low. Now take it out of 4low into 4hi. Move the gear selector into drive, pull foward and then shift the transfer case into 2wd. That should take care of it.

You should have 2 selectors between the front seats. One is just for the transmission, park, reverse, neutral, and drive including 3-2-1. The other lever is for the transfer case or 4x4 selector. It has either just 2wd, part time 4x4, full time 4x4 and 4low. Or it has 4x4hi and 4x4 low. Yours might not have the 2wd option. Which means its a full time 4wd. What does yours look like?

Ok then don't worry about 2wd. Just do what I said earlier and skip the 2wd part. If its revving high before shifting check the transmission fluid level.

Get the check engine light looked at. Autozone does it for free. Have the coolant sensor replaced.

thanks Mark. I will do those things tomorrow. I was afraid putting in reverse while in 4l damaged the transmission. I hope not. What is that coolant sensor for.

No problem. (My names not Mark). Putting it into reverse won't hurt it at all in 4low. However, driving around with it stuck in 4low is very bad. 4low is strictly for short range driving. Pulling someone out of a ditch/snowbank/mud, taking a boat trailer in or out of the water. Things like that. You just have to be stopped and the transmission selector has to be in neutral to go in or out of 4low. A coolant sensor let you know if the engine is low on anti-freeze. Hopefully this helps you out and everything is an easy fix tomorrow.
