engine noise

Asked by slidder16 Aug 02, 2009 at 10:34 PM about the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my 00 4.7 grand cherokee laredo had a slight knock at acceleration and once again when I let off the gas, yesterday I passed someone and something went wrong, and now there is an eratic knocking or pinging noise. I took apart the top of the engine and took off the drivers side valve cover where the noise sounded like it was coming from, and I cant see anything out of place. The engine is DOHC

alright so 1st things 1st, make sure oil psi is good, how is it running at idle, and does it sound like its at the top of the block or the bottom, also seems stupid but a knock to some can be a ticking noice to others, make sure its not just a manifold leaking, they usally will give ya a bad ticking sound

hmmmm...have you been good about changing oil? could be a spun bearing. My guess is it's something in the bottom end.
