cost of repairing a lifter on a '03 Jeep Gr Cherokee v8???

I have a '03 Jeep Gr Cherokee w/ 120k miles on it.  Started to rattle loudly & stalled @ 2 separate stop lites before I was able to get it home.  The AAA tow guy along w/ my father said that it sounds like I damaged a lifter in the engine???  Unfortunatly, I'm not very good when it comes to auto repair.  I have no idea what a lifter is, nor how much it's gonna cost to repair???  It's a 4.7 liter V8 engine.  Would anyone know the ballpark figure on what this might cost me, so I can figure out wheather or not I should repair it or just get a new vehicle???

This is simple call a reputable mechanic and have him take a look or a dealer as there is no wayto answer that over the internet as no one can be sure what it will cost without someone who knows what he is looking at to estimate cost of repair. good luck
