The cable that drives the speedometer has either become detached from behind the instrument panel or two has broken or become too loose. You would need to get behind the panel to find out which problem it is. Also, replacing it will be an easy task as there are many videos on youtube (also a junkyard will have the part for next to nothing if you plan on DIY'ing it). Best of luck!

may thanks what happens to mileage as on 38,000 at the moment

The LCD display that shows the mileage will keep track of the milage via the cars ECM (Brain, or Computer). Once the Speedo is fixed, it should show the correct mileage. If you replace the entire Instrument Cluster the LCD display will pop out of the old one and will fit perfectly into the new cluster. These are very trusty components to avoid people from altering or (turning back) the milage as untrustworthy used car dealers used to do! Best of luck again sir!

Many thanks once again Sir. Do I have to replace the whole cluster or just the speedo ?

You could check and see if its just the cable that drives the speedometer, if its just the cable, there is no need to replace the entire unit. If the cable is intact, and taut, it may be an electrical issue with the instrument cluster, if thats the case then I would replace the full cluster. I hope this helps!
