Stalling at idle

I have a 1990 Mark VII LSC. Shortly after starting it my RPM's go back and forth from about 500 and 1500. It evens out after about 30 seconds but I was giving it some gas (not too much. probably got it to around 3000 RMP's) and after i laid off the gas it stalled. Any idea's what could cause this? thanks
