Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My Lincoln won't hold up in the back. It goes down like a low rider, my friend told me it has air ride suspension and I should replace it with springs instead of paying a lot to fix air ride the car is getting old should i do that? thank you

I had a 1990 and 1992 TC and both of them developed leaks in the air bladders, it happens...I spent $800 to have coil springs put on my 1990 and never had another problem and only had to do the back. If you continue to allow the leak, the pump will burn up...unless the problem is only the height sensor and you don't even have a leak..that can also happen. OR even the air lines from the pump under the hood to the back of the car. Does it pump up and raise when you start the car? Sometime you may even hear the buzz of the pump when the car is off and parked. Shop around....prices will vary greatly
Rear air bags last about 220,000 miles and run about $300 to replace. Well worth the cost of repairing.
Holy air bladder batman, I don't know where you went but I got 3 estimates anywhere from $1,850 .....$2,200. to $2,300 and mine began a slow leak at 120,000 and by 125,000 were toast.....
Guess I've been lucky with 4 LTC's but all easily went over 200k miles with air bags. Replacing air bags is simple remove and replace type of repair. I am a limo company and do get deep discounts at Lincoln dealerships but shop around. Those prices are way out of line for that type of repair.
I had 2 Crown Victorias, and 1 Grand Marquis with rear air suspension. With over 200K miles on each, only 1 developed leaks in the air suspension, and I had mine repaired at the local ford dealer in the range of $600 dollars. I used aftermarket remanufactured air bags instead of the ford parts because the after market parts where around $110 vs $330+ per part.

My 1999 Lincoln Town Car's air suspension seems to be getting worse. The back is sitting low in the mornings. When I start the car, the pump brings the back up. Even the front of the car seems to be handling the bumps worse. My mechanic didn't mention checking the height sensor at all. 123,000 miles on it. He did mention checking for a leak in the airlines. Should I do that first? And if I switch to coils, how much impact does that affect the ride? Help, limited funds
I have a 2001 Lincoln town car it seems a lil squeaky when at slow speeds sound I turn on my air suspension or no?

I have a Lincoln Town car and my rear rite tire is rubbing the wheel well can I continue riding on it
Can I fill the air bags and disconnect the pump so they stay full and I don't burn pump up
I am thinking that its a lot more profitable for mechanics to install the springs than repair the air ride system. Maybe I am wrong here but it can't be much more work than installing a set of coil over shocks.
air bags are easy to replace yourself. I have a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis with almost 175K miles on it. I replaced both rear air bags at 150K miles. I put the heavy duty bags on it and they were only $100 each. So for $200 I now have new air springs and retained the great ride. Be sure to replace the O rings. Some of the cheaper kits O rings are not so great. I got the Arnot heavy duty bags and the O rings have been doing fine. I don't get the crazy prices these shops get for replacing them. It only takes at most 1/2 hour each side. Very easy to replace. Watch some Youtube videos first.
Got 2 air springs for $100 each. Had muffler shop replace.

Hi Ken. Thank you for responding. My original post was 3 years ago! In that time, I replaced the pump and 2 air bags (after market price that I bought on-line was 350.00 for all) The mechanic charged me 250.00 to install them! By the way, this same mechanic quoted me 700.00 just for the air compressor! That's why I went with the after market products. This was 3 years ago. In December 2018, the pump was dying. (The car now has 201,000 miles on it, and I've practically restored the whole car to the tune of 9000.00.) My new mechanic got the new pump for 235.00. Oh my goodness! How quiet it is? With the old after market pump I sounded like a fog horn every time the pump came on! Lesson learned. Now, the back of the car is sinking overnight again. Oh my God. It pumps back up in the morning, but I'm afraid I have a leak, or have to replace the air bags again. The air bags have 78,000 miles on them. They told me the problems with the air ride are never ending. They were right. I really don't want to put any more money into the car. Uhhh!
Hi Cindy Halloway, you may want to consider removing the air bags and pump and installing a good set of coil springs. I have a 2002 Lincoln Town Car that I bought in 2007. Around 2014, the rear end of my car started sagging if it sat for a day or more. This went on for about a year, and would always rise up as soon as I started driving it. Then in July of 2015, the pump went out and the car would no longer rise up in the back. I drove about 5 miles to my mechanic with the rear end sagging and that was the hardest and bumpiest ride ride ever! He told me that it would be about half the price to remove the air bags and pump and put in coil springs, and I would never have to worry about this issue again. At the same time, I had him put in a good set of shock absorbers all around for a total price of less than $500. My car has still rides very well. Hope this helps. Frank
I had my 2000 Town Car 14 years before I wrecked it twice I had to replace the airbags because in the morning the car was sitting on the ground but it always pumped up in Road fine when I started the car now I have a 2004 town car with 80,000 miles on it I just got back in town after 6 months and the car is sitting on the ground I started it the pump turns on and runs for a couple minutes but it does not lift up at all I shut the switch off and I examined the bags I don't see any tears in them and when I pumped it up I had attacked up just slightly the air suspension did kit full of air to where the bags became somewhat hard I'm not sure if it is leaky airbags or could it possibly be the ride height sensor I'd hate to buy all these parts and it only be the $34 ride height sensor does anybody have any insight on this
When my air pump was going bad, it would turn on but wouldn't fill up the air ride. You can try jacking up the rear end some and see if you can turn on the pump to fill it up a little without the pressure of the car on it. Then lower it to see if it was able to fill it up some. If it fills up some and you can't hear any leaking air anywhere, I'd imagine the air pump is shot.
