Transmission probs

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi. Have a ‘99 Lincoln Town Car. Twice
before recently when it downshifted to
pass someone on the highway, it never
shifted back up. In both instances, I exited
highway and found car was stuck in first
gear when I took off from stop. Both times
I was able to turn off ignition, let it sit, and
then it began shifting normally again.
Yesterday I passed someone and it
downshifted and got stuck again. This time
shutting off and restarting does not help. It
does not shift out of 1st in drive. I can
manually shift into 2nd. At that point if I
shirt into drive, it will stay in second until
stopping, then downshifts to 1st as it
should, but won’t shift to second. Again I’ll
manually shift into second, then back into
drive where it will stay in second until
coming to another stop. Thoughts? Does
the 99 TC have limp mode? No dummy
lights are on. Overdrive/no overdrive does
not change anything. Help?

I think you're at a point of taking it to a trans repair shop for some computer diagnostics to pinpoint where problem lies. (Assuming you've checked the basic stuff like ATF level). Problem may be with TC, or front pump shaft, or loss of fluid pressure, hard to say, but tranny problems are usually noticed in top gears/OD first.
