My '97 Grand Marquis has a radio with only a cassette player. I would like to
install a radio with a CD & cassette players from a 2004 Grand Marquis. I
looked up the schematic wiring diagrams for each car but the colors or each
specific purpose do not match. Do instructions for this conversion exist
anywhere or do wiring harnesses for this exist? Thank you

When you're switching from one vehicle to another, look at the wiring diagram for the stereo itself and the description of what it's for, then look at the vehicle diagram and compare wire name (for example: if on the stereo, you have a black wire with a white stripe for left front + speaker, and the vehicle wiring diagram says the left front + speaker is green and gold, you would connect the green and gold to the black with white stripe)
You would be better off going with an aftermarket unit. Car Toys, Best Buy, Crutchfield
Just plug it in and see if it works. If the plug doesn't fit , it won't work.
No don’t do that. I tried that once and caused the radio head to burn out. And yes the plug fit but the wiring was different.
