Car Starts then immediately dies

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I go to start my car it starts but after about 2 seconds shuts off. I've had this
happen a couple times before, but I ave been able to restart it and it runs just fine. Today
however it just wont stay started, just keeps dying. Battery is new only about 6 months
old. What could it be?

sounds to like your fuel pump is on its way out, the fuel pump is inside the gas tank you have to drop and remove gas tank to get to it.

I've already replaced the fuel pump, it's less than a year old.

well how about the fuel filter? also there is a cut off switch in the trunk by the left hinge MAYBE that is bad if that isn't it I'm not sure if FORD uses one could be a bad fuel relay (have no idea if there is one where they would put it) and lastly there is a fuel regulator on the fuel rail (usually on the backside of the motor under the hood) hopefully that might help you out a little bit.

Try everything above, especially the fuel pump relay, just replace it. It should show in the user's manual. When I have more time I could look in my 98 shop manual. Also do the filter, for sure if not done. Also try googleing it.

If Crissy says it's the swithch, it's the switch. Experiment with wiggling the key while it's running, it might stop, then you know for sure.

99 grand marquis did exact same thing. Start then die. Had bad gas. Used gum out fuel system cleaner and a can of chemtool b12 in the gas tank. Car started straight up. Driving it now. I put plus gas In it after that. Runs great. Starts first crank no die.

You've got to see if you're getting fuel & spark, If you are, then maybe the computer, ECU. They can be had at a junk yard. Not too hard to replace. Also, knock sensor is a possibility, in fact that's what I think. Replace it and see. Any error codes? It would show. not, computer, though, necessarily.

I have a 89 Grand Marquis with similar issues. Car will start and cut off after a few seconds. It's a metal block under the hood that I tap and the car starts right up.

2004 mercury Grand Marquis starts up and immediately cuts off. There was an insect caught in my mass air flow sensor got it out car runs perfectly fine now took 2 days to figure out. I'm amazed and very happy no money to fix the problem.

My 89 Merc gran Marquis starts & runs for sometimes a week. Then just stalls and won't start. I tap on the ignition control relay ( front drivers side inner fender) and sometimes it will start. Other times no start. Right now no start. Replaced relay, played with the connection & it started. Drove across the yard, was idling & shut off. Won't start.
