Pinch Bolt

Asked by Jimboslice1017 Mar 11, 2019 at 07:57 AM about the 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis 4 Dr LS Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis and live in
Michigan drive everyday all 365 days out the year.
So there's quite a bit of rust underneath it, I'm
working on replacing the upper ball joints. The
driver side ball joint gave me no problem, the
alignment cams/bolts came off with ease and the
pinch bolt no problem at all. The passenger side on
the other hand is one tough SOB, the cams/bolts
weren't hard but the pinch bolt is seized won't
budge at all rock solid. The nut came off no
problem after some penetrating oil but the bolt
itself will not give. I've tried a hammer, channel
locks, vise grips, sledge hammer, heavy duty
penetrating oil, breaker bar you get it. Nothing at all
will get it to break free anyone have any ideas on
what I can do???

Heat is good for rusted/seized bolts. If you have a small torch (hand held propane), try heating the bolt or the metal surrounding the bolt until it is red hot and let it cool. Heat it up a second time, let cool a minute and then try removing the bolt. The heat expands the metal, then cooling contracts it so the heating / cooling cycle will usually break it free. Be very careful with the heat / flame and have a fire extinguisher available.
