2001 Mercury Grand Marquis starts fine.. Shift lever moves freely (little resistance) but transmission does not go into drive or reverse or anything else.
Have you tried to check the actual shift lever connected to the transmission that will engage the different gears...

Sounds like the linkage has fallen apart to the transmission.
