Did the motor stall? If it did, you will get dash warning lights (like for battery) and steering loses its power assist.

The motor didn't stall. However, I disconnected the positive battery post for five minutes and reconnected it, and the system seems to have reset itslef. Warning lights are gone and car is running fine. I will have it professionally diagnosed in the morning. Thanks for your input Ken F.
