what makes a 2004 grand marquis start and shut off when in gear

your park/neutral safety switch is gone, or bypassed. this switch detects when the car is in park or neutral, allowing it to start, if its gone, it may not start at all, or start in any gear. possible it had gone bad and the previous owner just bypassed the plug with a wire or paper clip to make the car think its always safe to start, and not spend any money doing it. good place to start.
