2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt. just tried to start the car and the battery sounded dead. but... the stereo, lights etc. still work and now turning the key results in a rapid clicking sound. what gives?

The rapid clicking is the starter motor. You could have enough power to turn the lights on but not enough to engage the starter motor. Charge the battery or get a jump start.

hey tenspeed, seems you're right. i got a jump, drove the car around for a while and all seems fine (starts up again after stopping a while). i'm still going to test the battery and keep an eye out for alternator issues. thanks!
Make sure all your battery conections are clean and tight. And look to see how old your battery is. You may all so have a bad cell in the battery
