My service engine soon light is on. Is it a sensor?

Car is 16 years old and is now starting to hesitate upon acceleration.

We need to differentiate between the CEL, check Engine Light, and 'Service engine soon'. The latter is an oil change reminder.. When a sensor fails the CEL will light. But if it has not had things like spark plugs, air filter, for a long time it might just be that.
