Why will my 2000 Mitsubishi Montero not run when the humidity is high?
Whenever the humidity is high (especially in rainy weather or when it's been
foggy), my 2000 Montero Sport will finally start, but sputters and pops. If I try
to give it gas, it dies. I watch weather.com, and when the humidity drops
below 80 to 85%, I go out and start it with absolutely no problem, sounds
great, and revs the engine perfectly when I quickly depress the gas pedal. I
have replaced the 3 coils, and that didn't help. I have a new set of plug wires
and plugs to put in, but it's not like just one of them is misfiring. It's like all
the wires are crossed. This started happening when I wasn't far from home,
and was able to try to get it back home again in low gear at a 5 mph idle. By
the time I got it home, smoke was rolling out from under the hood, and a
driver going the other way thought it was on fire. It wasn't. I left the hood
open after I got home, and when the sun was out for a couple of hours and
the humidity came down, it started and ran perfectly fine again. Ideas?
