It starts cranking when you attach the cables to the battery? It starts ? It continues to crank or stays engaged? Or what. Sorta sounds like the switch is broken and making start circuit continuity or the starter relay is stuck. Try tapping hard with the handle of a hammer or similar non conductive tool. Report on symptom questions. Let us be clear.

Some cars have been prone to this in the cold and damp. A high quality replacement part will last another 15 years. But which one was stuck. You have to be systematic. methodical, careful, and observant. tenacious

gentleness, self control. a solid thump on the relay or solenoid for the starter can make the switch return internally. If yours has the solenoid mounted on the starter, and access is difficult from below, you can use the handle to push towards it. or rap on it. you may have a helper momentarily connect at the battery. This can make it release. Removing the one that sticks and replacing it. That is the thing. To identify, follow your cable from B+. If you end up removing the starter because that is where it was stuck, it may be bench tested at the parts store, but temperature difference may be in play on the car perhaps. Using a multimeter on the cars wires can prove the ignition switch is not stuck or there are no devices added or possible cause that is out of sight to you.

If yours is wired with a small pigtail wire to enable the starter, that wire would have come from the neutral switch and the ignition switch. some vehicles may have a relay that is enabled by that wire, and it may be attached to the starter. You can google your starter to see first what it is expected to look like.

If yours is wired different it could be necessary to trace the wire from there back up to the battery. Electrical repairs must start with battery cable removal, so you cannot arc a tool between a live circuit to ground, or a wire that has power still in other words.

Did ya get it? the cranking without starting up means starter solenoid or starter relay depending on the parts in use. if smacking the starter, it returns ? and starts and shuts off ok? replace the part that responded to the thump., right? you may find a remanufactured starter with a warranty is the choice you make.
