1992 - 1998 was the generation of your car so anything with the same engine between those years should work. P.S. Mine is a 1994 and my engine is trash so don't think it only happened to you
Hey Heather, Pete is not entirely accurate. GM went to an OBDII system in 95 and 96, so make sure the car you are pulling it out of uses the same computer type. Otherwise it will not work without changing the computer, wiring harness, and a bunch of sensors.
you can just make sure that all the conector are the same and make sure every thing bolts up you might have to get the brain of the car you took the motor out of to make it work right but you don't have to do that all the time? you could always call GM and ask them what they think?
you have to use a OBD II engine which is 96 or newer, you don't have to use a 3.1 out of a grand am. If you do it will bolt in and the connections should be the same. You can also use an engine out of a 96 or newer grand prix or lumina but there will be some swapping of parts involved
go to junkyards an look for same engine u can get for cheap there
I know that they used a 4 speed (3 speed was the 1992-1993) on the V6's, and i think the other engines as well, so it should be fine. So long as your car isn't the manual, all should be well
Again, Pete is mistaken. Transmissions have nothing to do with you scenerio. Safe bet. Make sure the engine is out of your year or newer. Most states have laws that prohibit placing an engine in a car that is older then the car.
If she does an engine swap, the engine has to mount to the tranmission
Hey you guys are great..thanks so much..i do know that manual tran and auto tran have to match up to engine but was worried that I would have to replace engine with exact year and exact car make..so like using a lumina or whatever will sure make looking for a replacement easier..transmission is auto and no trouble with it ( knock on wood) ..since I am in Canada we don't have any laws about replacement motors being older than car..but guess it stands to reason with these cars with brain boxes..iI still think the older the better..at least hubbys Z28..he can just throw a motor in it and go not brain box or anything..they sure don't make 'em like they used to eh boys!
Any 96+ 3.1 GM motors should bolt up fairly easily, no matter what car they came from.
the bolt patterns on the engine are the same for the tranny, manual or auto. Therefor, the tranny is irrelevant!!
A 3.1L motor from a from a 96-98 would be preferred but if you could find a 3.1 from say an oldsmobile it should work just fine. It's a GM car and other GM parts can be used so long as they have the same motor mounts and whatnot.
heather dont bother the grand am other than the ones built in the 70s are crap save your money and buy a real car . for the money & time it's gonna cost you do all that you can buy something dependable . car is never the same after an engine swap!
Since Heather asked about the motor over four years ago, she probably got married, had kids and is now driving a minivan.
