Fuel problem

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 97Pontiac grand am started
smelling like gas (as if flooded)
evertime I started It (and no I
didn't pump the gas when i
started it). Now it will not start,
turns over but sputters and
there is some kind of pop and
not a fire but what seems to be a
small explosion (like I've seen
carburators do) right near or on
air filter.  When I checked air
filter it was saturated with gas.
The car has a v6 with a (I
believe) 3.1L engine.

You have a classic case of dirty stuck fuel injectors, The car is flooded without using the gas pedal and it's gotten to the point that they need to be removed to clean them. Also clean the throttle body and change the air filter.
