I replaced the water pump on 97 pontiac grand am se it will start but wont stay running can anyone help me

Replaced water pump because car was getting hot and water was coming out from the
water pump  now car will start but will not stay running you have to keep your foot on the
gas to  keep it running if you try and put car into gear it just dies and  its is like sputering
when you start it now there is no water in my oil but when you put car into gear and it dies
there is a small amouth of black smoke coming out of the tail pipe can anyone tell me
what might be the issue please

It will start but have to keep foot on gas to keep it running and when it first starts it sputters befor it dies if u dont give it gas everytime you let off the gas it will die

Are you positive it's a 6 cylinder because if it is a 4 cylinder I can tell you right away what the problem is.

Yes im positive but will you please tell what it would be if it was a 4 cyclender curious if you dont mind please

If it was a 4 cylinder the timing belt works the water pump and if the belt was not lined up correctly it would cause the vehicle to run like you said your vehicle is running now.
