Car leaking and sputtering

I just got a 2002 Pontiac Grand am and it's over
heating. Also sputters when idling. I filled up with
water and when I started it and came to a stop it all
poured out from under the car. What could this be?

I was told it needs a thermostat but could that be the sole reason for all these problems?

Also the only lights that are on is to service engine soon and low coolant but like I said it just spews out anyway uggh:/
