Pontiac Grand am shift knob

Asked by Hufna Sep 17, 2016 at 04:01 PM about the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT Coupe

Question type: Car Customization

Hiiiiiii,
I want to replace the shift knob on my Pontiac grand am...however the
replacement I want to use has no shift lock button on the side.
My question is how do I go about making this change, as I understand it I
need the button to get my car out of park, reverse the car and the likes.
Is there any way I can replace the shift knob mechanism so I do not need a
button and can use the shift knob I want???

That switch is there for safety so you don't accidentally shift into gear , specially if you have kids in the vehicle

That much I know, I was wondering can I get a different kind of shifting mechanism installed alltogether without a button that would not compromise my safety? (Also thank you for answering)
