2003 Pontiac Grand Am Crank, no start advice

Asked by GuruD4T378 Jul 07, 2023 at 06:39 PM about the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When inserting the key and turning to run, I do not hear the fuel pump
engage but hear the sound of the doors unlocking over and over every 5
seconds.

I took to the dealer and they assured me the problem was the fuel pump.  I
had that replaced, they sent me a video of the car running.  When I went to
pick up my car, same exact problem, crank, no start.  They told me they
would look more into it.

They called back and said that the battery was dead, so I had them replace
the battery.  Again, when I went to pick up my car, it would not start.

At this point I am not having them look at my car any more as I'm $1500 into
repairs and they have not fixed the original problem I brought it in for.

Does anybody know what else could be causing this intermittent issue?  It
sounds like some sort of electrical problem, but I do not know where to
start?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I’ve seen this before, most of the time it is a bad door lock relay, but on occasion I’ve had door lock switches be bad, wiring inside the door tunnel between the door and the body intermittent cross connect and BCM trouble. Stay away from the dealers, most techs there do not know what they are doing, can’t read flow charts or wiring diagrams and if it doesn’t have any codes then they assume nothing is wrong. Find a good independent shop and have them check it out. I think your battery was good and they just got into your pocket for a new one.

Thank you for your response. I was skeptical at the fuel pump diagnosis to begin with, and especially the battery, but the dealership assured me that those were the problems, so I trusted that it would get my car working. I only took it to the dealer in order to have them fix a recall on my car while it was there. Lesson learned. There is a good shop near my house that I typically take my vehicles to, I will see if I can get my car there and see what they can find.
