I went in today to a car audio business, i had the exact same problem when i installed my custom deck. What i learned was that all 2000+ GM motor vehicles need is an Interface installed also, this is because the radio sends security signals that activate chimes in the car and a custom deck screws it all up, so you NEED an interface if you want your deck to work.

I had the same issue and spent a couple hours Googling answers and finally found that there is a factory amp in the car. The amp uses the Dark Green wire as a trigger. Once I connected the wire that feeds amp to the system remote wire from the stereo everything worked. Here is the Grand Am Wiring Diagram as I installed it. Radio Constant 12v+: Orange No Switched 12v Power. Radio Ground: Black/White Stereo Amp Trigger: Dark Green Front Speakers Size: 4x6 Left Front Speaker (+): Tan Left Front Speaker (-): Gray Right Front Speaker (+): Light Green Right Front Speaker (-): Dark Green Rear Speakers Size: 6x9 Left Rear Speaker (+): Brown Left Rear Speaker (-): Yellow Right Rear Speaker (+): Dark Blue Right Rear Speaker (-): Light Blue Hope this helps.

I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand AM GT with amp in rear driver side wheel well. I installed an after market radio with very little problem. Order a mini barb to aftermarket antenna adapter now! Crimp all wire connections, and I suggest you zip tie all wires and run them to the right and down inside. Be sure to lift up all the half dozen or so RCA connectors, so they don't keep you from pushing the stereo all the way back. The mounting hardware seems to be the standard plastic. The instructions will tell you to cut off all the pieces that are shaded for the pontiac. This was a pain. I used pliars to wiggle the tabs back and forth till they broke. But the long tabs that go on the front mount I used a hack saw(fine blade) which made quick work of it(4 min. tops). You will only be able to put 1 side on and barely get it to fit over the front of a double din head unit. It might scare you that it won't fit, but with a little finesse it will fit. I suggest using the left side, so you have 2 screws to hold it in place. You have to hold it on the front of the head unit while you push it back. I had a GPS with mine and ran the antenna down and to the left across the drivers area and up through the fuse panel and on to the dash. It's magnetic, but I had to use Velcro. Ran the rear view camera wire, and all rca cables down the passenger side to the trunk for the amp. I hope this helps! It was a good 3 hour project for me.
